Rural extension: Volume 2: Examples and background material More Information
Hoffmann, V., Christinck, A., Lemma, M.
2009
This publication is the second part of a handbook consisting of three volumes: Volume 1 deals with basic concepts and approaches. This publication (Volume 2) contains the supplementary documentation of cases. Volume 3 is a trainer´s manual.
Extension and its role and function must be seen in relation to a country´s overall socio-economic situation, the situation of different population groups and the government policies adopted by a country for rural development and agriculture. Extension is classified as an accelerator for rural and agricultural development. Food and nutrition security is often a problem for the rural poor especially in ACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific) countries. So by helping to improve farming and farm yields, agricultural extension can be a powerful tool for personal development and the organization of community life. The overall aim of the editors is to present and disseminate concepts and methodologies that bring greater transparency to the planning, implementation and evaluation of advisory work, thus converting decision-making into a more rational process. This does not necessarily mean simplification; but it certainly provides a better foundation for all types of extension work. The handbook attempts to explain basic theories and important relationships in the multitude of extension activities. Based on these and current practical experiences, ways of structuring the work of advisors in everyday practice are proposed. The book should however not be understood as a set of recipes, since it cannot possibly set firm rules for individual cases. All it can do is to indicate how solutions to problems could be worked out systematically.

The rural finance landscape More Information
de Klerk, T.
2008
This easy-to-read publication describes current savings, lending and insurance practices. It identifies the service providers working in the informal, semiformal and formal sector and discusses current approaches and methodologies. It is appealingly illustrated and targets those who want to know more about rural finance as well as development practioners concerned with identifying the financial services most appropriate for their project or organisations. Designing and executing rural finance programmes requires ‘expert´ knowledge. Although this booklet pays some attention to good practices in rural finance, it is not a training manual. It does not set out to show readers how they can develop and implement programmes. There is however a list of useful addresses of organizations included: It is recommended to consult these organizations when this type of assistance is needed. For the interested readership willing to acquire a deeper insight into the topic, there are also some recommendations for further reading included in the booklet.
