2008
This easy-to-read booklet aims to provide ideas to farmers who would like to produce snails on a small scale for consumption or marketing. It is not primarily intended for entrepreneurs wishing to engage in large-scale snail farming for the export market. Attention is focused here on three major species: Achatina achatina, Achtina fulica and Archachatina marginata; that are common in tropical areas, especially in Africa. Limiting factors to be considered for effective snail farming are discussed so that farmers do not start breeding snails without considering the advantages and constraints.

Small-scale mushrooms cultivation More Information
van Nieuwenhuijzen, B
2007
This booklet describes the technique of mushroom cultivation on substrates that only need heat treatment. Certain mushroom species however, can only be cultivated in the warmer climates of the tropical regions whereas the growing of the Button Mushrooms predominantly takes place in more moderate climates. The process of composting for mushroom cultivation is more complex than the preparation of temperature treated substrates. This booklet meets the demand and covers the lack of information on this specific subject. It describes the complete process of composting of agricultural wastes as well as the cultivation of the appropriate species mentioned above. The process of obtaining good quality spawn and spawn production is covered in detail in a separate chapter. Attention has as well been given to harvesting and post harvest handling. Due to a high demand for processed (mostly canned) mushrooms in the suburban and urbanised regions the basics of mushroom processing have been covered in a separate chapter. A chapter on marketing in which the importance and possibilities of local and regional markets are pointed out is also included.

Non-timber forest products: the value of wild plants More Information
van Andel, T.
2006
Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) are wild plant and animal products harvested from forests, such as wild fruits, vegetables, nuts, edible roots, honey, palm leaves, medical plants, poisons and bush meat. Millions of people – especially those living in rural areas in developing countries – collect these products daily, and many regard selling them as a means of earning a living. This booklet presents an overview of the major commercial wild plant products from Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific. It explains their significance in traditional health care, social and ritual values. And forest conservation. It is designed to serve as a useful source of basic information for local forest dependent communities, especially those who harvest, process and market these products. It is hoped that this booklet will help arouse the awareness of the potential of NTFPs among development organisations, local NGOs, government officials at local and regional level, and extension workers assisting local communities. Case studies from Cameroon, Ethiopia, Central and South Africa, the Pacific, Colombia and Suriname have been used to help illustrate the various important aspects of commercial NTFP harvesting. Several examples are given of how NGOs can help local communities to improve sustainable harvesting and marketing of wild plant products.
