This publication provides a wealth of information culled from workshops and seminars on the herbs and medicinal sector in African, Caribean and Pacific (ACP) countries. These workshops were organized by the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA) and the Ceter for Development of Enterprise (CDE) as well as the Commonwealth Secretariat. The experts involved in the various discussions represented a broad range of actors: entreprenours, researchers, national and regional organizations dealing with productions and trade, regional and international development agencies, banks and investment agencies and contributed to giving a holistic view to this broad sector. The main issues discussed included international trade and development, sustainable trade and development, sustainable production, the need for creating a regulatory environment and the integration of traditional medicine into healthcare systems. The intention of this book is to disseminate this knowledge and to underline some of the challenges indentified by various experts, which will need futher attention and support. It is hoped that the main issues, rindings and recommendations summariesd here will raise the interest and support that this broad and complex area deserves.
