Plants, people and nature is a book about benefit sharing between private enterprise and the community. It provides practical examples from around the globe of how private companies involved in the production, processing and marketing of natural products interact with national and regional governments, local industry and, above all, village communities. This publication grew out of a workshop on benefit sharing held in Cape Town during the 4th World Congress of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (WOCMAP) in November 2009. It includes 22 case studies of benefit sharing in practice.

A collaborative effort of various authors, this well-illustrated guide addresses a major gap in knowledge on sustainable production and plant protection in horticultural systems. Primarily intended for field practitioners and extension workers, it is also useful for technicians, students and scientists. Besides providing practical knowledge on how to sustainably manage biotic threats to healthy vegetable production, the guide has useful suggestions on how to teach and disseminate IPM practices to a larger audience.

This book has been prepared at the occasion of the tenth anniversary of PROTA. It presents 3 examples of species for which the PROTA review article was the basis for a stakeholder consultation: spiderplant, roselle and sorghum. They were identified as promising in terms of product development and market opportunities, and were tried out in pilot projects in collaboration with grassroots organisations. The other 22 species (belonging to 8 different commodity groups) included in this book have not (yet) been selected for pilot projects, but they are all promising and/or interesting and should be promoted for research resulting in improved product quality and market strategies.

This publication forms the skeleton of the PROTA Databank, being a checklist of the plant resources of Tropical Africa. The 8681 species (11750 scientific names) are presented in 2 ways. The first part (Chapter 2) lists the species alphabetically by scientific name, followed by the family name and the Primary Use (PU), i.e. the number of the commodity group to which the species has been assigned. The second part (Chapter 3) presents the same species but arranges per commodity group, followed by the family name and the Secondary Uses (SU). This edition replaces the Basic list of species (2002) which listed 6376 species (8390 scientific names).

Hidden resources: Non timber forest products for livelihood improvement and biodiversity conservation: Documenting Kenyan experiences

|
The experiences recorded in this manual are intended to stimulate an innovative and constructive approach to environmental management particularly in those woodland areas threatened by increasing aridity. The case studies selected by PELUM Kenya and its partner organisations document the way communities living adjacent to forest areas identified and developed NTFP activities that have contributed to livelihood improvement and biodiversity conservation. Now that these experiences have been documented they can be shared with other communities living and working in similar agro-ecological areas.

Conservation agriculture holds special promise for Africa, where farming communities face the problems of low yields, impoverished soils, lack of capital, and labour shortages brought on by the scourge of AIDS. It is a way to improve the livelihoods of millions of people and achieve sustainable agriculture over a wide area. The manual is based on the skills and experience of 90 farmers, extension personnel and scientists from 16 countries throughout Africa. It is written in clear, easy-to-understand language, and is illustrated with numerous clear line drawings. Case studies throughout the book show how farmers in different situations have put conservation agriculture into effect.
