Plants, people and nature is a book about benefit sharing between private enterprise and the community. It provides practical examples from around the globe of how private companies involved in the production, processing and marketing of natural products interact with national and regional governments, local industry and, above all, village communities. This publication grew out of a workshop on benefit sharing held in Cape Town during the 4th World Congress of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (WOCMAP) in November 2009. It includes 22 case studies of benefit sharing in practice.

The question of land tenure is returning on the agenda and many countries are showing renewed interest in the different ways of accessing natural resources with a view to eventually introducing land reforms. in the context of food security, world-wide poverty alleviation, environmental protection or quality of life. This is why FAO has prepared this multilingual thesaurus. This publication will contribute to clarifying the debate on land subjects as well as to making the related field interventions more efficient thanks to the presentation of an unambiguous or unequivocal terminology of the various subject matters related to land tenure.

Poverty, food insecurity and malnutrition have become critical urban problems. Women play a crucial role in household food production, growing vegetables in gardens and vacant urban spaces, raising animals and trading in foods. Their vital contribution has however for a big extent been neglected by city officials, economic planners and development practitioners who have tended to concentrate on the industrialization of food production. This book analyses the roles of women and men in urban food production and through case studies from three developing regions suggests how women´s contribution might be maximized. In the second part of the publication, detailed guidelines and tools show how to bring women into the mainstream of urban agriculture research and development. Providing evidence from around the world as well as field-tested guidelines, the book is essential reading for policy makers, planners, researchers and practitioners working in urban agriculture programmes.

Agriculture is an urgent priority worldwide and farmers in the developing world find themselves in the front line of some of the world´s most pressing issues – climate change, globalization and food security. This publication is essential reading for students, policy makers, agricultural scientists and social scientists aiming to bring the concerns of grassroots farmers to the fore. Unlike other books, which disregard the needs of the people they deal with, this publication offers a new bottom-up approach to the topic. It helps the reader to gain a valuable insight in agriculture which and is as well appropriate to farmer´s social, physical and economic needs. The book presents accounts of Farmer First workshops at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), University of Sussex, UK and summarizes successes as well as failures and the lessons that have been learned. Agricultural innovation now takes place less within national public-sector and research organizations and more in diversified public-private systems. Therefore this book asks: How do farmers engage in these public and private systems? In the context of increasingly globalized and complex agricultural supply chains, how do farmers take part in the policy processes defining access to markets, and to agricultural research and development.

This booklet is a handbook for agricultural extension officers and those who support them in government, NGOs and international organizations. Much of what is contained in this booklet has been dealt with in much greater detail in related publications in print and online. Unlike more specialized literature this publication provides a brief, straightforward account of how HIV/AIDS undermines community welfare and the productive capacity of farmers. It suggests some ways in which farming practices can be adapted to mitigate these effects. The tools and approaches described in this publication will be familiar to many readers. They have been tested in small-scale farming communities throughout the world. Many of the insights and experiences referred to here com from Sub Saharan Africa. They can be used and adapted to encourage community members – irrespective of age, sex, material status or ethnic and religious identity – to work together to define their problems and find solutions using their own local resources.

This easy to read booklet deals with urban agriculture described as follows: “All forms of agricultural production in or directly adjacent to the city, which mainly provide urban markets with food products for sale to consumers or for consumption by the city-dwelling growers themselves.” The publication has primarily been written for women and men involved in urban agriculture: those new to crop growing in towns, as well as the producer with prior experience in rural agriculture or horticulture who plans to grow food or market garden crops in urban areas. It will also be useful for those responsible for guidance of urban agriculture: district information services and community workers of community based organisation, non-governmental organisations, and government services, agricultural and nutritional extension. Urban agriculture covers a whole range of production systems, methods, techniques and socio-economic aspects. The diversity of the products can be divided into: vegetable horticulture, animal husbandry, fuel and food forestry (including agroforestry) and integrated waste-water aquaculture, including fish production. This booklet concentrates on a number of facets. It mainly focuses on vegetable growing, primarily intended for one´s own food supply, which can be achieved by means that are simple, cheap and locally available and it is based on small-scale techniques. The wide range of vegetable species grown in towns by horticultural techniques will only be mentioned in general terms. This publication helps you to make specific choices and describes aspects of safety, environment and health. It contains techniques for small-scale horticulture around the house or in the yard. Soil and water problems get extra attention and even though socio-economic aspects are not the main objective of this booklet they are considered to be important enough to be mentioned as well.
